Help to prevent the introduction of software patents in Europe!

Ashampoo Technology GmbH & Co. KG advises all software creators in the European Union to investigate the planned introduction of software patents. We believe that it would have very harmful effects on Europe's software economy and could threaten the existence of many small and medium-sized companies.

The plans can still be stopped. Recent developments show that policiticans begin to understand the issues that are involved with the proposed change. Quite a few are now actively working to prevent it.

But not all politicians have realized the danger yet. We should help them to better understand the problems that software patents would cause so that maybe they will change their minds!

More information about this topic and about ways to participate in the protests can be found here:

Ashampoo Technology protests new patent legislation plans

Ashampoo Technology GmbH & Co. KG has joined the ranks of many hundreds of thousands of european companies and private citizens that publicly protest the plans to legalise pure software patents.

Current plans for new legislation in the European Union include a proposal that would allow basically any kind of software to be patented, even the most trivial ones. This is in contrast to the current laws, which explicitly exclude software from patentability, together with the closely related fields of mathematical methods, thinking patterns and other non-physical inventions.

Patents are meant to protect an investment made into a costly development process. They are not meant to be used to monopolise trivial ideas with no development cost to speak of for whoever got to his lawyers first. These kinds of patents could have lots of bad ramifications for small and medium sized companies, as is illustrated here.
